Eric obtained his B. Sc. in Molecular Biomedicine from the University of Bonn, Germany, under Jörn Piel. He then moved to Jena, Germany, for his M. Sc. in Chemical Biology. Eric spent part of his Master studies in the Moore lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego before returning to the Hertweck lab in Jena to complete his degree. He then re-joined the Piel lab, this time at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, for his Ph.D in Microbiology. Eric’s current research focus evolves around bacterial diterpenes, awakening silent biosynthetic gene clusters and the refactoring of bacterial biosynthetic gene clusters. If Eric had not become a scientist he would have studied aviation management. So when he is not in the lab he typically nerds around everything related to aviation.
